Safety Minded Workers
In order to deliver the highest quality arboricultural services on a consistent basis year in and year out, we must do our work safely.
OSHA rates tree work as a hazardous profession because workers navigate high voltage, heavy equipment, roadside traffic, chainsaws, heights and trees themselves on a daily basis.
Our trained crews conduct initial and daily jobsite surveys to identify hazards and implement controls:
- Only properly trained workers operate aerial buckets and other mobile equipment
- Inspect trees and limbs for structural weaknesses before climbing or cutting
- Use appropriate fall protection equipment
- Inspect all equipment before use to ensure that it is not damaged or defective
- Use safe work procedures to prevent the cutting of climbing ropes, lanyards, and safety belts or straps.
- Use safe work procedures for climbing, felling, topping, and pruning trees
Safety meetings are held every Monday morning at Total Tree Care headquarters. CPR and first aid training are mandatory for all field employees.
TCIA, our trade association, provides direction on how member companies should establish a culture of safety.
Hazard Free Property
Inspect and assess trees in the early stages of decay!
Licensed arborists are trained in Visual Tree Inspection (VTI), which helps them to identify internal defects using visual signs.
The Resistograph instrument is used for testing decayed and hollow areas in trees.
Applying VTI with Resistograph technology aids in early problem detection so that arborists can make the best decisions regarding tree removal or problem correction.
Lyme Disease Protection
Safe and Economical Tick Control
- Prune trees and clear underbrush to increase sunlight and lower humidity, making properties less tick hospitable
- A natural mulch barrier within 3 yards of woodlands forms an "obstacle course" for ticks and reduces lawn populations up to 50%
- Treatments by licensed applicators control over 95% of Lyme Disease carrying nymphs in the spring. Treat wooded areas adjacent to the home for maximum effectiveness.

Arbor Day Traditions
It's been our tradition since 1970 to give 4th graders a tree seedling on Arbor Day. We want them to develop a comfort feeling, love and respect for trees at an early age.
If you or your child received a seedling from Total Tree Care, please submit a brief story about how the tree has provided benefit to you or your family. The story should state when you received the tree, what type of tree it is and how tall it is now.
The winning story and photo of the tree and its owners will be featured in a future newsletter and the tree will win a free pruning!
Send stories to mtoth@totaltreecare.com or Total Tree Care; PO Box 216; Cheshire, CT 06410; Attn: Mike Toth.

Remembering Harianne Williams (May 2, 1930 - December 1, 2006)
Harianne built the business originally known as Cheshire Tree Service with her husband Tom Sr. in 1957.
In the early days she did everything but climb trees. She was known to drive one of the old fleet (jalopy) trucks to a job site after finishing her accounting work and responding to the morning service calls.
Harianne worked up until the last few months of her life as bookkeeper for Total Tree Care and our sister company, Arbor Oil.
For all who knew her, Harianne was "the nicest person." We miss her and will remember her forever.
