Mulching for Health Reasons
Trees growing in a natural forest are anchored in nutrient rich, aerated soil that provides the best environment for root growth and mineral intake. Residential and commercial settings are noted for poor soils, organic deficiencies, and wide fluctuations in temperature and moisture. Mulching reduces water loss and weed competition and improves soil quality. When the right material is properly applied in the correct depth, mulched landscapes improve plant health and provide a well-groomed appearance.
Total Tree Care provides a one-stop-shop for customer mulching needs. We deliver the many tree and shrub health benefits from proper mulching. As a synergistic benefit, we've also learned that an effective wood chip barrier provides an "obstacle course" for ticks.
Total Tree Care recycles suitable biomass that is generated from tree pruning and removal operations. We stockpile wood chips and process them into landscape mulch for our customers - delivered and spread to their liking.
We not only beautify yards, but also improve the health of trees and shrubs with proper mulching.
Safety News
Reputable companies follow strict safety guidelines due to the inherent hazards in performing tree work.
ANSI Z133.1 establishes safety standards for tree care operators, workers and the public. It covers general requirements, electrical hazards, vehicles and mobile equipment, portable power tools, hand tools, and equipment and work procedures.
The new Command and Response system recognizes that poor communication has been the downfall of many an arborist. Communications shall be established between the arborists aloft and the arborists and other workers on the ground before cutting and dropping limbs.
For years Total Tree Care has applied command and response techniques and looks forward to seeing others use it in their normal work process. Many tree care accidents involve untrained workers. Be wary of low price bidders who don't invest time or money for safety's sake.
Drought Stress Impacts Tree Health
Drought and dry soil conditions cause root damage and physical changes in trees - especially seedlings and transplants. Established trees and shrubs located on marginal sites or improperly planted are also affected by drought. Many trees and shrubs will not recover from this exceptionally severe drought. It's been quite a while since we've suffered such a lengthy drought period. When the rain finally came, it was too late for many trees and shrubs.

Partner Spotlight - Turfcare, Inc. Adds Key Ingredient
"This year the problem has been just getting water, period", according to John Pattison, Turfcare president. Turfcare specializes in solving irrigation problems for condominiums, estates, and commercial and residential properties. By tapping water sources such as ponds, rivers, and existing and new wells, they are creative with irrigation management in situations where it is difficult to supply the right amount of water at the right times [without over- watering] in order to alleviate dry soil conditions.
Customers invest significant amounts of money in their trees and shrubs. They optimize the return on their investment when the key ingredients of effective irrigation and tree care are blended for a total solution.
For a Washington, CT estate located on a 200- foot elevation, Turfcare installed a fully automated irrigation solution by pumping water from a lake over a 1/4 mile distance. The owner is confident about the health of their trees and plants. They do not have to hire people to come on site to water in a sporadic fashion. An effective underground drip irrigation solution is hidden from the beautiful landscape.
"Total Tree Care has been an excellent partner for over twelve years", stated Pattison. "Quality work by talented people from a service-oriented company is hard to find these days. It's risky to recommend service providers because everyone's definition of quality and service is different. We both have similar attitudes towards these essentials, which enables us to build lasting customer relationships."
"When trees and shrubs go without water, owners deal with issues such as pest problems, low fruit production and early leaf drop", stated Luke Williams, President of Total Tree Care. "Let us provide a health and safety assessment of your trees and shrubs this fall. Understand the effects of this season's drought. Determine what remedies are in order."
